چکیده

A method for direct measurcmcnt of percentage of assimilation of organic matter by zooplankton that does not require the quantitative recovery of feces and can be adapted for USC in the field as well as in laboratory investigations is described. If it is assumed that only the organic fraction of the food ingested by a zooplankton animal is affected by the digestive process, it can be shown that percentage of utilization is defined as (F’ E’) (l-E’)(F’) x1oo’ 1 where F’ is the ash-free dry weight : dry weight ratio (fraction of organic matter) in the ingestccl food, ancl E’ is the same ratio in a reprcscntativc sample of fcccs. The mcthocl compares favorably, as a measure of assimilation, with direct measurement of the quantity of organic matter lost from foocl during passage through the digestive tract.

Role of organic matter, clay, and iron contents in the sorption of oxytetracycline on river sediments

Background: Oxytetracycline (OTC) is a widely-used antibiotic; metabolism studies indicate only partial assimilation of it inside the body. Traditional wastewater treatment plants cannot remove OTC, and this results in the release of considerable amounts of the drug into aquatic environments. There is much concern over the role of residual antibiotics in the development of new generations of ba...

Quanti®cation of nitrogen assimilation ef®ciencies and their use to estimate organic matter consumption by the earthworms Aporrectodea tuberculata (Eisen) and Lumbricus terrestris L

Earthworms affect nitrogen cycling directly through the consumption and assimilation of organic N and the turnover of N through excretion and mortality. Although earthworms can process large quantities of organic matter, organic-matter consumption by earthworms based on their nitrogen requirements has not been quanti®ed. Organic-matter consumption and the ef®ciency of nitrogen assimilation by e...

Light Regimes Shape Utilization of Extracellular Organic C and N in a Cyanobacterial Biofilm

UNLABELLED Although it is becoming clear that many microbial primary producers can also play a role as organic consumers, we know very little about the metabolic regulation of photoautotroph organic matter consumption. Cyanobacteria in phototrophic biofilms can reuse extracellular organic carbon, but the metabolic drivers of extracellular processes are surprisingly complex. We investigated the ...

Variation in Food Web Connectivity across Intertidal Gradients in Embayment and Fluvially-dominated Estuaries

Despite suggestions that extensive mixing and large-scale transport of organic matter occurs within estuarine systems and across fluvial-estuarine-coastal ecotones (Teal 1962, Odum 1980), more recent evidence in estuarine detritus-based food web systems has shown strong gradients in the sources of organic matter assimilated by consumers across diverse fluvial-estuarine-coastal ocean scales (Pet...

Sorption, degradation and leaching of pesticides in soils amended with organic matter: A review

The use of pesticides in modern agriculture is unavoidable because they are required to control weeds. Pesticides are poisonous; hence, they are dangerous if misused. Understanding the fate of pesticides will be useful to use them safely. Therefore, contaminations of water and soil resources could be avoided. The fates of pesticides in soils are influenced by their sorption, decomposition and m...
